The Art of Bonsai: An Evening at the Ahern Garden

Members of the Greenville Garden Club gathered at the home of Bill and Sharon Ahern on N. Locust for an evening introduction to the art of bonsai. Bill shared what years of patient shaping, pruning, and training have taught him, giving members a real appreciation for just how much care goes into every miniature tree.

The setting made the program even more memorable. The Aherns' backyard centers on a cascading water garden, complete with a stone waterfall, lily pads, and a quiet pond that ties the whole space together.

Keeping a water feature that clean and calm takes more than luck. Tucked out of sight in a small utility room, a pump and plumbing system does the real work, quietly circulating water so the pond above can stay picture-perfect.

The garden had plenty of whimsy to go along with the craftsmanship, including a hobbit-style door built right into a stone wall — the kind of detail that makes a garden tour fun for members of every age.

Penny Anaway put out a spread of snacks for the evening, with one of Bill's bonsai visible on the porch rail just behind her — a nice reminder of what the night was all about.
